Bridgewater, NJ- On Wednesday, the Long Island Ducks will be hosting the 2018 Atlantic League All-Star Game, showcasing top players from all eight teams of the Atlantic League. This year, the Somerset Patriots will be sending five of their own, including outfielder and former major leaguer Julio Borbon.

Borbon said that being nominated and elected as an All-Star, “feels pretty good actually, it’s an honor, and it’s actually my first All-Star Game,” he continued, “I’m looking forward to being around a group of guys and seeing the dynamic of what the All-Star Game brings along with home run derby and being around different guys on different teams.”

Borbon was an essential key in helping the Somerset Patriots clinch the Liberty Division First Half Championship. Currently, the former major leaguer is batting .301 with five home runs and 33 RBI over 56 games this year. He ranks third in the league in runs (39), doubles (16) and stolen bases (19), fifth in hits (69), sixth in triples (2), ninth in RBI (33) and 11th in batting. He has held five separate seven-game hit streaks this season and has hit safely in 46 of the 56 games in which he has played.

Reflecting on the first half of the season, Borbon stated that his time in Somerset has helped him in many ways, “you never stop growing from understanding the dynamic of teams and the camaraderie, and what each brings to the team. So once you get involved in that throughout the year, you definitely grow each year.”

The speedy outfielder has five years of service in the big leagues, including three with the Texas Rangers (2009-11), one with the Chicago Cubs (2013) and one with the Baltimore Orioles (2016). He broke onto the scene with a .312 average and 19 stolen bases over 46 games in 2009. Borbon played 137 games with the Rangers the next season and hit .276 with 15 steals and a career-high 42 RBI.

The Atlantic League’s 21st Annual All-Star Game will be held at Bethpage Ballpark, the home of the Long Island Ducks, on Wednesday, July 11th at 6:35 p.m.

The midsummer classic will be preceded by the Digmi Home Run Derby and will showcase several of the top power hitters in the league this year. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to the biggest Fireworks Spectacular of the season.
