Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots (1-1) and the New Britain Bees (1-1) split the opening games of the season in Saturday night’s double-header at TD Bank Ballpark.
Game 1: Box Score!
A late rally in the opener led New Britain to an 8-4 victory. Tied at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning, the Bees scored four runs on a two-run single by Alejandro De Aza and two wild pitches by Zech Zinicola that led to the win.
New Britain had jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Jason Rogers and a sacrifice fly by Bijan Rademacher.
In his first at bat as a Patriot, Rey Navarro launched a solo home run (1) off the scoreboard to cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the frame.
An RBI double by Mike Fransoso and an RBI single by Steve Nyisztor put Somerset up 4-3 after two innings of play.
The former Delaware Valley University standout enters his first season with the Somerset Patriots and in the Atlantic League. In his four seasons with the Aggies, Wenger hit .448 and finished his collegiate career as the program’s all-time batting leader. He also set career marks in triples (16), finished third in stolen bases (63), fourth in doubles (37) and runs scored (127), tied for seventh in home runs (13), and eighth in RBI (101).
The Bees tied up the game on a solo home run by Ozzie Martinez (1) in the top of the third inning.
Jim Fuller (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning pitched. Zinicola (0-1) suffered the loss allowing four unearned runs in 0.2 innings pitched.

Somerset’s bats exploded for a 14-2 win in the second game.
The Patriots took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Kengor and Ramon Flores will later score on a passed ball.
Somerset extended the lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Kengor.
Alfredo Rodriguez’s two-run single, combined with a sacrifice fly by Flores, extended the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Patriots broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth inning. Justin Pacchioli started the scoring with a sacrifice fly and Craig Massey then hit an RBI single. The big hit of the inning was a bases-clearing three-run triple by Flores. An RBI groundout by Kengor made the score 12-1.
“Coming back in the second game really shows the team chemistry we have already,” said Kengor. “It was a team effort from top to bottom. I think we have a really good lineup one through nine. It might not be a conventional lineup. We might not have as much power as other teams, but we have a bunch of guys that can swing the bat.”
Rodriguez struck again with a second two-run single that made the score 14-1 after the sixth inning.
Jovan Rosa’s RBI double in the top of the seventh inning made the score 14-2, which would be the final.
David Kubiak (1-0) allowed a run on four hits and struck out four batters to earn the win. Christian Friedrich (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
The 2019 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 1:05 pm game against the New Britain Bees on Sunday, April 28th. The game includes an appearance by Paw Patrol’s Chase and Marshall and Girls Softball Day. There will also be a pre-game autograph session and everyone gets to Run The Bases after the game.
